USC Student Arrested for Fatal Stabbing of Homeless Man on Greek Row

Ivan Gallegos, a 19-year-old student at the University of Southern California (USC), has been taken into custody on murder charges following the fatal stabbing of a homeless man during an attempted vehicle break-in on USC's Greek Row.

The incident unfolded on Monday evening when Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers responded to a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon in the 700 block of West 28th Street. According to LAPD reports, the altercation began when the homeless man allegedly attempted to break into vehicles, leading to a confrontation with Gallegos, who then stabbed him.

Interim LAPD Chief Dominic Choi provided additional context, explaining that Gallegos encountered the homeless man breaking into his car behind a fraternity house. The homeless man allegedly claimed to be armed, prompting Gallegos to stab him, reportedly in self-defense.

The homeless man's identity has not been released, and he was declared dead at the scene.

Gallegos, a Los Angeles resident, remained at the location and cooperated with law enforcement. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, with his bail set at $2 million.

Previously featured by USC's Annenberg Media, Gallegos was recognized as a promising musician and business student at the Marshall School of Business. The profile detailed his upbringing in a challenging environment with parents involved in gang activities and frequent incarceration.

Despite these hurdles, Gallegos pursued his musical passion, excelling as both an instrumentalist and vocalist. He is also linked to the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at USC, confirmed by a fraternity manager in connection with the incident.

The case has drawn significant attention and concern within the USC community, leading to ongoing investigations into the deadly encounter on campus.
